Cross-Country Skiing

Areas in Calgary normally trackset by machine:
  • Shaganappi Point Golf Course - 27 hole course maintained by Calgary Ski Club volunteers
  • Confederation Golf Course - 9 hole course maintained by Foothills Nordic Ski Club volunteers
  • Maple Ridge Golf Course - subject to available volunteers and club equipment
  • Canada Olympic Park (COP) - offers a super training course but perhaps too difficult for beginner skiers
  • Hawk Ridge - south of Calgary off the 22X highway

Areas in Calgary not trackset or groomed available for skiing include parks and schoolyards. Unless immediately after a snowfall, skiable areas can be rough due to competing uses such as pedestrians, dog walkers and cyclists. These include:

  • Weaselhead Natural Environment Park
  • Beaverdam Flats Park
  • Bowness Park
  • Edworthy Park
  • Fish Creek Provincial Park
  • North and South Glenmore Parks

Areas near to Calgary that offer tracksetting, very good terrain, varied ski trails and good skiing include:

  • West Bragg Creek
  • Ribbon Creek
  • Bearberry Nordic Centre (near Sundre)
  • Sandy McNabb (west of Turner Valley)
  • Canmore Nordic Centre.

Areas further away that are well worth the drive for trackset trails, varied terrain and good snow include:

  • Peter Lougheed Park
  • Mt. Shark Trails
  • Smith Dorrien
  • Chateau Lake Louise
  • Emerald Lake/Field Trails

Note: Some ski areas now charge user fees. At present these include Bearberry, C.O.P., Canmore and Hawk Ridge. Kananaskis Country may institute user fees either this winter or next to help pay for facilities and services.
